I Had to Take the Bus
I am sitting here at Starbuck’s, at 9:14pm, breaking my head over what I should write for the world to read. Or perhaps, for just one person who happens to be you.
It’s been a little over 7 months since I’ve let my fingers do their magic. And can I just be real with you!? My world has been rocked and perception changed drastically.
I am returning to words and writing because it is an avenue where I feel at home. For many years, I did not feel heard. I felt timid and hidden behind someone’s shadow. Like a single mom grabbing the bus every week day to make it to and from her job, making just enough to provide for her children, that is how I felt on the inside. A girl from a small town, trying to peak into the chaotic world to see if there is space for her to discover significance.
This must be the most beautiful chapter of my life. I am healing and receiving all my soul and spirit needs. We become our thoughts, and often, we need to take time to uproot lies, which were planted for far too long.
I thought I’d be writing about famous people and their stories, but when I sat down today, nothing really flowed. I went blank. It just felt unauthentic, and I thought to myself… why am I trying so hard to make words come together? So I let my heart run the keyboard.
Are you ready for it?
I mean this with all my soul. I patiently await the day I get to step on a stage and share with the world my journey. Not in a written format, but more in a speaking engagement. The process of where I started and how I got to where I am today has been enticing. At times uncomfortable, hard, painful, peaceful and adventurous. All these words summarize quite well, yet are scratching the surface. I know my victory will become a breakthrough for many others, and I want you to be a witness to that.
I love what Oprah Winfrey once said, “everyone wants to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down”.
Gosh I appreciate quality over quantity. Close circles over large crowds. Quiet moments over entertainment. Bus rides over limousine. Early mornings over rowdy weekends. Classy over trashy. There is something so precious about diving deeper into yourself and pulling out what has been hidden for years, yet feels like a lifetime.
Sometimes I feel like people think I’m riding a fancy limousine, when in reality, that limo has broken down a long time ago and now I’m just making my way back home. It’s a long time coming, but the few girlfriends who are walking with me are pure gold. They are priceless. Irreplaceable. I can be me and no façade is needed. Your crew, those in your corner, often determine how far you will go, and whether you will make it.
Surround yourself with believers and supporters. People who accept you for who you are. Friends who can laugh and cry with you, all in one evening. Simple, raw and relatable people. I love how empowered and heard I feel when I leave the presence of the right people. I never feel drained or discouraged. In fact, I soar on wings like an eagle because I know I am exactly where I need to be and I must continue moving forward.
I love speed. I really do. I admit, slow people is my pet peeve. One of my dreams is to stare in a movie, riding the latest and hottest Austin Martin race car down some wild street. What I am realizing about life though, it’s not about speed. It’s about the journey. It is not even about the destination. Forget that. We can get so caught up on our future and dreams, we forget about the beauty in a moment. I hear birds chirping these days. I think I’ve finally slowed down, and I can confidently write, there is joy walking through the water puddles with no specific agenda. I don’t even know my destination, and I find freedom in that. Going with the flow is an option.
This Saturday morning, as you sip on your warm cup of coffee and choose to read this far down, may I ask you a question? Are you moving too quickly and forgetting to live in the present? Because life is happening right now, and if we’re too caught up on someone else’s fancy, we allow distractions to ruin a moment which will never repeat itself.
Who can you lean on when your glamorous limo breaks down? Let’s all agree: there are too many posted highlights, but not enough real people to be there with us in our lowlights.
We need one another. We need you. Our world is a better place because of you. Life is a journey, and your destination has lots to do with the people you decide to run through water puddles with.
They say, April showers bring May flowers. Cheers to the rains of life which allow beautiful flowers to spring forward.
I’m off to celebrate and explore a small town with my sisters. You got anything planned this weekend?
